B/OLD: Aging in our city – Viellir dans notre ville 2019

From ‘age friendly cities’, to ‘smart cities’ and ‘sustainable cities’, how we live together in urban spaces is on the public agenda, here in Montreal and around the world. But who are the citizens that are imagined and implied by these terms? How can we work together to make the city a better and more inclusive place to grow old?

B/OLD : Aging in our city was a free and trilingual (English, French, LSQ) event, that took place at Concordia University on May 16 and 17, 2019, with extended programming May 14 to May 24.

B/OLD examined the experiences of aging in Montreal from a multidisciplinary, multisectoral and intergenerational perspective inviting community activists, students, policy makers, the media and, most importantly, older adults themselves, to “be bold” and to embrace “old”.

Age 3.0: Aging in the city

Age 3.0: Aging in the city was a one-day event at Concordia University. With free activities in both French and English, the day was set up as a fair where participants were invited to move freely to concurrent activities throughout the day, including lively panel discussions, exhibitor kiosks, art installations and film screenings.

Dawn, Life, Moonlight

Over the course of two months, ACT research assistants and students, Ashley McAskill and Kelly Leonard, alongside ACT community partner, Groupe Harmonie, facilitated a creative digital photography workshop with three participants at an HLM downtown Montreal. On April 20^th, we had the final outcome of this workshop, a photography exhibit entitled, “Dawn, Life, Moonlight”- a beautiful collection of photos taken by the participants in a mixture of black and white, and colour photos.

Respecting Elders: Communities Against Abuse (RECAA) is an activist organization of elders that has been working locally for over a decade to fight elder abuse. With its culturally and linguistically-diverse membership, RECAA has developed an expertise for working with Montreal’s ethnocultural communities. They use non-verbal approaches such as forum theatre to sensitize elders to their rights, and work with them to develop strategies to stop abuse. During the Re:Memoration exhibit on August 25, 2016, RECAA performed a choreographed bollywood dance ahead of the release of the ACT and RECAA-produced film Madhu’s Saris (link). They used the day to build further relationships with elders and community groups in Montreal and to share their approaches for creative and art-based social interventions.

On May 19th, residents of Hillside exhibited photographs and other artistic works in the common room of their residence. For several months, residents have been participating in bi-weekly photography workshops hosted by ACT and the Contactivity Centre. The workshops were an opportunity for residents to become acquainted with digital cameras and hone their photography skills.

The workshops and the final exhibit are a partnership between Concordia University’s Ageing + Communication + Technologies (ACT) project and the Contactivity Centre, a community partner of the office municipal d’habitation de Montréal.

Vieillir & Agir dans un monde numérique (Aging & Engaging in a Digital World)

This day of exchange first aims to reach health and social service professionals / managers of interested in the use of digital technologies in the context of their work with the elderly. More broadly, the reflections and workshops will address the issue of aging set in a digital world. What might be the impact of digital technology in the lives of seniors? What are the ethical issues involved in the relationship between practitioners and older adults with the use of technologies? How can digital technology be put at the service of the people who work with the elderly? Since technologies require special skills, how do we establish good conditions for learning and creating interest for their use.

Cette journée d’échange vise d’abord à rejoindre les professionnels / gestionnaires du réseau de la santé et des services sociaux et du milieu communautaire qui s’intéressent à l’utilisation des technologies numériques dans le cadre de leur travail auprès des personnes âgées. Plus largement, les réflexions et les ateliers offerts porteront sur la question du vieillir ensemble dans un monde numérique. Quels peuvent être les impacts des technologies numériques dans le quotidien des personnes aînées? Quels sont les questionnements éthiques qui interviennent dans notre relation aux technologies en vieillissant ou en travaillant auprès des aînés? Comment la technologie numérique, pourrait être mise au service des travailleurs œuvrant auprès des personnes âgées? Puisque les technologies nécessitent des compétences particulières, comment pouvons-nous mettre en place de bonnes conditions d’apprentissage et susciter de l’intérêt pour leur utilisation?

Aging Activisms Media Capsules Workshop

From April 29th to May 2nd, Trent University and Concordia University, through ACT, brought an intergenerational group together to share stories of activism and social change and learn media skills. The goal of the Aging Activisms Media Capsules Workshop was to co-create a series of media capsules (or digital stories) that record individual histories of women who have been involved with activism throughout their lives.

OWL Podcast Series Launch

Set to air on CKUT’s campus community radio (90.3 FM), this podcast series brings together ten years worth of recorded interviews to discuss in-depth perspectives on topics of social justice, civil rights, gender activism, ageing, and international justice.

The OWL podcast has emerged from an intergenerational collaboration between Michelle Macklem, a second-year MA Media Studies student and Rose Marie Whalley, the host of the OWL weekly radio show.
