Sam Thulin

Samuel Thulin is a researcher and artist working at the intersection of mobilities research, communication and media studies, and sound studies. He holds a PhD in Communication Studies from Concordia University and recently completed a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Centre for Mobilities Research at Lancaster University. His practices of research and making investigate how relationships to place, space, and location are entangled with multiple (im)mobilities and with developments in mobile communication technology. He has written about and created artworks exploring: mobile listening and mobile production; confluences of cartography and auditory culture; locative media and contested senses of place; the situatedness of mobile practices; and creative and emergent methodologies. He is the guest editor for a forthcoming special issue of Wi: Journal of Mobile Media on the theme of Mobile Making. Thulin is beginning work on a Canada Council funded project bringing together a range of issues including the feeling and affect of distance, the representation and performance of remote places through online interfaces, and processes of composing with media archives. At ACT Thulin has provided instruction on sound recording and interviewing for RECCA members, as well as collaborating on David Madden’s Ageing Waves project.
